Should I give a dating match my WhatsApp number in Nigeria?

An adult Nigerian woman pauses with her phone before deciding whether to share her number with a match.
Changing the chat channel is a choice about access, not proof of closeness.

The short answer

Keep talking in the app until you want to share your number. If you choose WhatsApp, review who can see your profile photo, status and activity before sending a message. Those settings can limit some visibility, but they do not hide your phone number from the person you chat with. You can say โ€˜I would rather stay here for nowโ€™ without giving a longer explanation.

A match asks to move from the dating app to WhatsApp after a few pleasant messages. It may be convenient. It also gives them your phone number. You are allowed to decide whether the conversation has reached that point.

What changes when you move?

On a dating app, a match may know only the profile details you chose. A WhatsApp chat uses your phone number. WhatsApp says the other person can see that number, while your settings govern some other profile details. Blocking later can stop contact there, but it does not take back a number already shared.

Suppose Tola enjoys a chat with Femi but does not want her work and family contacts mixed with a new match. She stays in the app for another week. Femi accepts the answer and continues an ordinary conversation. That response tells Tola more about his respect for her pace than moving to a new app would.

Make the privacy check before sharing

Open WhatsApp's own Privacy settings and choose who can see your photo, About, last seen and status. Check group invitation and unknown-call controls if they matter to you. The menu may change, so use the current help page rather than a screenshot from an old guide. Keep your address, workplace and live location out of a first chat on either service.

A separate number is a personal choice, not a safety guarantee. It may bring extra cost or another account to manage, and a determined person can still save what you send. Choose a channel whose limits you understand and whose notifications you can comfortably handle.

A short answer is enough

Try one of two honest replies: โ€˜I like talking here and would prefer to stay on the app for now,โ€™ or โ€˜I'm comfortable moving to WhatsApp; let me check my privacy settings first.โ€™ Neither sentence invites an argument. A person may prefer another channel too; each adult gets to choose whether the conversation can continue under those terms.

If a match pressures you for your number, sends a link that asks you to verify your identity, or claims that sharing a code will prove trust, pause. Use the dating provider's report or block tools if needed. Moving off the app should never be a condition for respecting a no.

Questions you may have

Can I hide my number on WhatsApp from this match?

WhatsApp's help says your phone number remains visible to a person you chat with. Review its current settings for other profile details before deciding.

Is refusing WhatsApp rude?

No. You can prefer the original app. A respectful match can accept that boundary or decide the channel does not work for them.

Does moving off the app mean we are more serious?

No. The channel is a practical choice. Talk separately about whether you want to meet or build a relationship.
