Ask what a relationship means now, not just whether it sounds serious

A Nigerian dating conversation about direction, exclusivity and pace that leaves both people free to answer.

Say the relationship direction you want, then separate it from the arrangements you are actually discussing. Wanting a lasting partnership does not establish exclusivity, a marriage timetable, family introductions or sexual consent. Ask about present terms one at a time.

A shared word can hide different plans

Two adults have met several times and both say they are serious. One means choosing one person to get to know. The other means eventually wanting marriage, while still dating openly now. Neither sentence settles the current arrangement. A useful conversation makes those differences visible before either person starts making assumptions.

Nigeria includes many communities, faith traditions and ways of forming relationships. This article does not supply one national courtship rule. Your own values can be clear without presenting them as something every Nigerian adult must share.

Make your own position available for a real answer

Begin with what you want and can offer: whether you are hoping for a long-term relationship, whether you want to date exclusively now and what pace fits your life. Let the other adult speak to each point. A polite yes to keeping in touch is not necessarily a yes to every other term.

Allow an answer you do not prefer. If agreement is required to avoid an argument, the conversation has become pressure rather than clarification. You can choose to leave a mismatch without making the other adult promise a future they cannot honestly offer.

Keep each kind of permission separate

Being exclusive does not require exchanging passwords. Wanting marriage does not automatically authorise a family announcement. An affectionate relationship does not supply sexual consent. Discuss visibility, introductions, private information and intimacy as their own choices.

If you agree on current terms, put the useful part into ordinary words. You need not draft a contract or demand screenshots. Revisit the conversation when something material changes, rather than treating an early statement as a permanent guarantee.

When the answer stays vague

You can ask one clearer question if the first exchange was rushed. If the answer remains uncertain, decide whether you want the arrangement that exists today. Do not organise your life around a commitment that has only been implied by reassuring language.

Use this in your own words

Four questions, four separate answers

  1. Direction

I am hoping for a lasting relationship. What are you looking for at this point?

  2. Present arrangement

Are we both choosing exclusivity now, or are we still getting to know people?

  3. Pace

What amount of time and contact can we each realistically offer?

  4. Visibility

Who, if anyone, are we comfortable telling? Let us agree before involving others.

These are optional prompts, not a score or diagnosis. Adapt them to your situation. This tool does not submit or store answers.

Questions you might still have

Does this guarantee commitment?

No. A conversation clarifies what each person says and chooses now. Follow-through and changing preferences still matter.

Should every serious relationship involve family quickly?

That is a choice to discuss, not a national rule. People have different beliefs, family circumstances and privacy needs.

Can I leave because our aims differ?

Yes. You can respect an honest answer and decide that the current arrangement does not fit you.
