Decide what you want to share, with whom and when. Family involvement can be welcome, limited or unwanted; it is not a universal requirement. Do not announce another adult's name, photos, faith or intentions before agreeing what may be shared.
Separate your values from someone else's access
You may value a relative's advice or want a relationship consistent with your faith. That does not mean every early conversation belongs in a family group chat. An adult deciding whether to meet again can seek general advice without circulating a profile, workplace or private messages.
Consider what you need from the conversation with family: perspective, practical support, an introduction later or simply a boundary around repeated questions. The amount you share can follow that purpose instead of expanding automatically.
Use this in your own words
Choose the smallest useful disclosure
- Advice
Describe your own decision without forwarding the other person's profile or messages.
- An introduction
Agree on the people, place, wording and ability to leave before making arrangements.
- A public announcement
Ask explicitly about names, photographs, tags and who can see the post.
- Not yet
We are keeping this private while we decide what we want. Please do not contact or identify the other person.
These are optional prompts, not a score or diagnosis. Adapt them to your situation. This tool does not submit or store answers.
Agree before the first introduction
An introduction can mean very different things to two people. One may see a casual greeting at an event; the other may hear a public statement of commitment. Explain the event, who will be present and what you intend to say. Give the other adult enough information to decline or suggest a smaller step.
Ask before sharing photographs or religious identity. A person's willingness to discuss faith privately does not authorise you to label them publicly, tell a congregation about the relationship or ask others to contact them.
A boundary can be respectful and firm
When relatives ask for more than you want to share, a short answer is easier to maintain than a story invented to stop the questions. You might say that you are getting to know someone and will speak about introductions when there is a mutual plan.
If family involvement could expose you or the other adult to harm, prioritise privacy and suitable local support. Afrolu cannot assess your household, provide protection or determine the legal risk of a disclosure. Avoid a confrontation simply to perform openness for an article's checklist.
Questions you might still have
Is involving family wrong?
No. The useful question is whether the people involved freely agree to the timing and the information shared.
Can faith be a relationship priority?
Yes. Explain what it means in your own life and ask about compatibility without assuming another adult's beliefs or requiring public disclosure.
