A date keeps cancelling in Nigeria: when to reschedule or move on

The short answer
Look for a clear new suggestion, not a reason you cannot verify. If you still want to meet, offer one specific time that works for you and confirm before spending on travel or changing work. If the other person cancels again without a workable alternative, you can stop making plans. You do not have to diagnose their interest to protect your time.

A first meeting was agreed for Saturday. It was cancelled on Friday. The next Saturday is now uncertain too. You can be kind about a change in someone's life without keeping every weekend empty.
A cancellation and a new plan are different things
‘I cannot make Saturday’ tells you the plan is off. ‘I can meet Sunday afternoon at the public bookshop we discussed’ offers a new choice. It may or may not suit you. ‘Soon’ leaves nothing to confirm. Read the words and actions you have, rather than looking for clues in response times or social posts.
Ada has changed a work shift once for a date that was cancelled. Her match apologises but offers no new day. She says, ‘I can do next Thursday after work. Please let me know by Tuesday; otherwise I will make other plans.’ This is a boundary about her calendar, not a test designed to catch someone out.

If you need clarity about what each person wants, discuss relationship intentions
Keep costs reversible
Do not buy a ticket, pay a deposit or rearrange care because of an unconfirmed ‘maybe’. If a date involves another city, agree on a public place and each person's separate journey before spending. A new plan should be possible for both adults to leave. If a cancelled meeting is replaced by an invitation to a private home, you can decline that new request.
A reasonable amount of flexibility depends on your own work, money and energy. There is no magic number of cancellations that proves a person's motive. The question is whether another attempt is worth the time and cost to you now.

If you are meeting in Lagos, use a short public first-meeting plan
Close the loop without a trial
If you want to stop, a short reply is enough: ‘I hope things settle for you. These plans have not worked for me, so I will not schedule another date.’ You may also simply decline a new invitation. Do not demand proof of illness, work or family needs from a person you have not met.
If they propose a specific new day later and you still want to meet, you can decide again. Nothing in an earlier cancellation obliges you to accept, and nothing in a kind apology obliges them to meet. A first date works only when both people make a plan they can actually keep.
Use a short boundary when you no longer want to reserve another evening
Questions you may have
Does cancelling twice mean they are lying?
You cannot know that from the cancellations alone. You do know that no reliable meeting is in place, and you can make other plans.
Should I ask for proof of the reason?
No. Ask for a workable new plan if you still want one. Decide from what the person can offer, not private proof of their life.
What if I already paid for travel?
Check the ticket or provider's own change rules promptly. Do not pay more merely to rescue a plan the other person has not confirmed.
