A channel change is a disclosure decision. It may reveal a telephone number, profile photograph, status, name, group relationships or other information according to current settings. It can also separate later messages from the dating service where the introduction began. Neither fact makes the move automatically wrong, but both deserve a conscious answer before the first WhatsApp message.

A person may prefer WhatsApp because it is familiar, cheaper for their data plan or easier for calls. Another adult may prefer to remain in-app because a phone number feels too identifying. Both are valid participation choices. Do not demand a number as identity proof or interpret refusal as deception. Read escalation from the next request, not from the app icon

Ordinary conversation can include a greeting, a call proposal, plans for a public meeting or a slower getting-to-know-you exchange. Pressure begins when the next step depends on surrendering something the reader did not freely choose. The relevant evidence is observable conduct and its sequence. A profile style, accent, nationality, job, grammar pattern or response time does not establish fraud.

One unusual message can be clarified when no danger is present. Ask what is being requested and state the boundary once. A legitimate person can accept that early dating does not involve money, account access, identity files or private pickup. Repetition, guilt, urgency, a changed story or punishment after a no is more useful than a stereotype because it reveals how the interaction handles free choice.

Europol's current romance-scam awareness guidance describes patterns such as unusually rapid closeness, generic communication, movement to private channels, requests involving money or financial details, and pressure when the target hesitates. Those are awareness cues, not a Kenya prevalence dataset and not proof about an individual account. Use them to slow down and protect control, not to publish an accusation.

Use one boundary that cannot be mistaken for a payment negotiation

Shorten the sentence to the present issue. If the match asks for fare, decline fare. If they ask for a registration code or screen share, do not provide it. If intimate-image threats or immediate danger have already appeared, skip the boundary message and prioritise safety, preservation and appropriate help. You do not owe an alert that evidence is being retained.

Do not negotiate a smaller transfer, send a test amount or accept money to return part of it. Do not receive funds for another person, buy cryptocurrency, open an account, forward a code or install a support tool suggested by the match. A story can be emotionally convincing and still leave the reader without a safe or lawful reason to participate. A public meeting can always be rescheduled until each adult controls their own route.

If the boundary is respected, continuation remains optional. Respect does not prove every earlier claim or create a debt. If the boundary is bargained, mocked or punished, close the interaction. The goal is not to win agreement about whether the request was reasonable; it is to keep participation, money, identity and devices under the reader's control.

Build the minimum record before a disappearing action

Reporting and blocking can change access to the thread or source profile. Where it is safe and useful, preserve the smallest record that a real route may need before taking an action that removes it. Keep originals and enough context to understand the request. A giant archive creates more privacy exposure without necessarily improving a report.

Write a short chronology in your own words: where the introduction occurred, when the channel changed, what was requested, what boundary was stated, what happened next and whether money or account data moved. Separate facts from interpretation. “The account asked for an M-PESA transfer after cancelling a public meeting” is a fact pattern. “Every person with that job is a scammer” is not.

If intimate material exists, avoid duplicating or forwarding it to friends. Seek current official or specialist guidance for the facts and jurisdiction. If there is immediate danger, leave evidence work for later. Perfect screenshots are not more important than reaching a safer place and urgent support.

Report where the conduct occurred, then route the actual harm

WhatsApp reporting, dating-app reporting, financial action and official incident routes perform different jobs. A block can stop one account from reaching the reader through that path. It does not reverse a payment, remove every new number, investigate a suspected offence or provide emergency response. Choose actions from the conduct, not from a generic hierarchy.

WhatsApp's help material explains report and block tools and says reported material supplies the service with limited recent context according to the current process. First-party wording can change, so inspect the live help page and account rather than relying on an old screenshot. A report is a request for platform review, not a promise of removal, account ban, investigation, reimbursement or offline safety.

Recover account control from a trusted device

Pressure sometimes includes a registration code, QR scan, linked-device request, screen share or remote-access installation. Never provide a code, password or device approval to a match or to someone claiming they can recover money. If account access may have changed, use a device you trust and current first-party instructions. Do not follow a recovery link sent inside the pressured conversation.

WhatsApp says linked devices can be reviewed and logged out, and its current help describes two-step verification as an additional account-control feature. Those statements establish provider-documented controls, not that an account is uncompromised or that a particular recovery attempt succeeded. Confirm the live state on the actual account.

Changing a telephone number is a significant decision and not a universal first step. It can affect legitimate contacts, financial services and account recovery. Consider it with the relevant provider or professional support when repeated contact cannot be controlled through ordinary tools. Do not announce a new number to the pressured account.
