Talk about relationship intentions without asking for a future guarantee

Make a present agreement about dating, time and exclusivity while keeping space for an honest answer.

Explain what you hope to build and ask what the other adult wants now. Discuss exclusivity, contact and introductions separately. A long-term aim can guide your choices without making either person promise that this particular connection will last.

Describe the arrangement before naming it

You have been seeing someone regularly in South Africa and the phrase 'seeing where it goes' is starting to mean different things. You think you are concentrating on one person; they think both of you are still dating openly. A shared calendar of pleasant dates does not resolve that difference.

Instead of asking only whether the relationship is serious, describe what you want to choose now. You might want exclusivity, one planned meeting a week or a clearer statement that neither person is seeking a lasting partnership. Each is a different question.

Make room for the answer

Choose a moment when neither person needs to rush away or perform agreement in front of friends. State your own preference, ask theirs and listen for an answer to the actual question. If the answer is uncertain, do not turn repeated questioning into a way to obtain the word you want.

An honest mismatch can be disappointing and still be useful information. You can decide that an open-ended arrangement does not fit you. You do not have to minimise your own aim to appear relaxed, and the other adult does not have to promise your preferred future to be treated respectfully.

An agreement should preserve separate choices

Dating exclusively does not create a right to passwords, location history or proof from someone else's phone. Introducing friends does not automatically authorise family announcements. Sexual activity requires consent separately from a relationship label; a provider's safety guidance is general education, not an individual legal assessment.

When something changes, name that change and return to the relevant agreement. The goal is a relationship that people keep choosing with real information, rather than a label that prevents anyone from admitting their preferences have changed.

Use this in your own words

A conversation with room for two positions

  1. My direction

I would like a relationship with long-term potential, and I want to check whether that is what you are looking for.

  2. This arrangement

Are we choosing exclusivity now? What does that include for each of us?

  3. Our capacity

What contact and time can we each offer without promising more than we can sustain?

  4. If we differ

Thank you for being clear. I need to decide whether that arrangement fits what I want.

Questions you might still have

When is the correct date number for this conversation?

There is no universal number in this guide. Talk when an assumption could affect your decisions or either person wants clarity.

Can I be serious about dating and still take time?

Yes. An intention about the kind of partnership you want is different from a promise that a particular person will become that partner.
