App breaks Β· Your workday

Pause the app for your own reason

Start here

Pause or delete an app if using it is taking more time than you want, or if you simply want a break. Tell a match about exclusivity only when both of you choose that agreement in words. Removing an icon from your phone does not make an agreement, and keeping an account does not prove you are dating others. Choose the app step and the relationship step separately.

You close a work notebook and reach for your phone again. The app has become a second inbox. Before you delete it in a tired moment, ask what you want the change to do for your day.

Is the problem time, contact or commitment?

If scrolling runs into sleep or work, try a break with notifications off. If a conversation feels good but you want to date one person, discuss exclusivity with that person. These are different problems with different next steps.

eSafety says pressure to get a match can bring stress or lost time and that regular breaks may help wellbeing. It does not say everyone must delete an account.

If someone demands a screenshot of your deleted app as proof of trust, ask what agreement they actually want. Proof by icon can avoid the harder, useful conversation.

Choose from the answer

Which choice solves today's problem?

  • The app is taking too much time

Try a time-limited pause and check whether the week feels better.

  • You want to date one person only

Ask for a shared exclusivity agreement before changing profiles for that reason.

  • You want neither the app nor this match

End the chat clearly if safe, then close the account using the app's settings.

Make the break easy to reverse

You could turn off notifications for a week, log out, or remove the app while keeping your account. Check the app's own settings if you want to hide your profile; an uninstall may leave an account visible.

Tell active matches only what affects them. β€˜I am taking a week away from the app; I will reply here after Friday’ is clearer than disappearing without a word, if you want to stay in touch.

Example conversation

A week away from the second inbox

In this invented exchange, adult professional Biko wants less screen time and adult match Rae has asked why replies slowed.

This is an invented example.

Biko
β€œI am taking a week away from the app after work. I will check messages on Sunday.”
Rae
β€œThanks for telling me. Does that mean you want us to date only each other?”
Biko
β€œNo, the break is for my time. I would rather have that other conversation when we are both ready.”

Biko explains the break without making a promise that has not been discussed.

Let exclusivity be a conversation

Ask β€˜Do we both want to stop dating other people?’ Name when that starts and what each person wants to do with existing profiles. Neither person should need to surrender passwords or let the other inspect private chats to have that talk.

If the answer is not shared, you can keep dating, keep talking without exclusivity, or step away. Deleting the app to avoid hearing the answer will not settle it.

Love is respect explains that unspoken expectations can hurt and that people should talk about them. It does not prescribe a date for deleting an app.

Sources and what they can tell us

The week-long break, sample message and account-setting choices are Afrolu editorial advice. eSafety supports taking breaks when app pressure costs time or wellbeing; Love is respect supports explaining expectations. Neither says Biko and Rae are exclusive.

  • eSafety Commissioner: Online dating: how to stay safe

It says pressure to get a match can cause stress or lost time and that regular app breaks may help wellbeing, relevant to Biko's second-inbox feeling.

Limit: It does not require deletion, measure Biko's screen time or define a relationship agreement.
  • Love is respect: Boundaries & expectations

It explains how unspoken expectations can leave partners on different pages, supporting a direct conversation about exclusivity.

Limit: It does not say an uninstall proves commitment or tell professionals when to close an account.

Questions you may still have

Does deleting the app make us exclusive?

No. Exclusivity needs a clear agreement between both adults.

Will uninstalling erase my profile?

It may not. Check the app's account and visibility settings before assuming it is gone.

Should I announce a short break to every match?

No. Tell people whose plans or replies are affected, if you wish to keep the conversation.

Can I return after a break?

Yes. A pause is your choice, and you can decide later whether the app serves you.
