Later-life dating Β· App choice
Have the talk before you remove the app
Start here
Do not treat deleting an app as a secret test or a substitute for a conversation. Ask whether you are both choosing to date only each other, what that means, and what each person wants to do with their account. You may pause, hide or delete for your own reasons at any time. A demand to show your phone or password is a different issue; you can keep those private.
At the bookshop veranda, Kamau places his phone face down while Leah speaks. He has enjoyed their dates and wants to focus on her. The useful next step is a question about their shared plan, not a silent tap on an app icon.
Ask the question the app cannot answer
Try, 'I would like to date only you now. How do you feel about that?' Listen to the answer. Someone may enjoy the connection and still need time. A yes should be freely chosen by both adults. A deleted app cannot tell you whether the other person agrees, what boundaries you share or how you will handle a change of mind.
Example conversation
A question before the settings menu
This invented conversation is between adult Nairobi daters Kamau and Leah after several enjoyable meetings.
- Kamau
- βI would like us to date only each other. Are you ready for that?β
- Leah
- βI like seeing you, but I want another week before I decide.β
- Kamau
- βThank you for saying so. I may pause my app for myself, but I will not call that an agreement between us.β
Kamau can change his own app use without claiming Leah made a promise she has not made.
Pause, hide or delete for a reason you own
If the app is tiring, take a break. If you have agreed to be exclusive, you can decide together whether keeping accounts open fits that agreement. Before deleting an account, check the app's own settings to understand what happens to your profile and data; deleting an icon and closing an account may be different actions.
eSafety says regular breaks from dating apps may help wellbeing when pressure to get matches causes stress or lost time. It does not set a dating milestone for deletion.
A relationship talk is not a phone inspection
You can explain your choice without handing over passwords, message history or access to your device. If someone insists that only a phone search proves loyalty, say what privacy you will keep and notice the response.
Love is respect says partners should discuss digital boundaries, including relationship status and device access, while keeping the right to say no.
Your app choice
Which choice is yours today?
- You both choose exclusivity
Discuss what app accounts and contact with other matches mean to each of you.
- One person wants more time
Keep the status honest and decide whether waiting feels right for you.
- They demand passwords or proof
Keep your device private; pressure over access deserves a separate boundary.
Keep checking the agreement, not the icon
If you choose exclusivity, talk later if the agreement needs to change. If one adult wants to keep dating others, you can decide whether that fits you. Clear words and consistent behaviour matter more than a screenshot of an empty home screen.

Sources and what they can tell us
Kamau, Leah, the bookshop talk and the pause option are Afrolu examples. The sources support a voluntary digital-boundary conversation and optional app breaks, not a universal deletion deadline.
- Love is respect: Digital boundaries
It invites partners to discuss online relationship status, device access and communication terms, and says people may say no and change digital boundaries over time.
Limit: It does not give a rule for deleting dating apps or require Leah to show Kamau a phone. - eSafety Commissioner: Online dating: How to stay safe
It says pressure to get matches may bring stress or lost time and that regular breaks from dating apps may help wellbeing.
Limit: It does not say a break proves exclusivity, set a date count, or explain any particular app's deletion controls.
Questions you may still have
How many dates before deleting apps?
There is no fixed number. Talk about what you both want when the question matters to you.
Can I delete my app before we are exclusive?
Yes, for your own reasons. Tell the other adult only what you have chosen, not what they owe.
Does deleting the icon close my account?
Not always. Check the specific app's account and privacy settings.
May I ask to see their phone as proof?
You can ask about the agreement, but phone access is not owed; respect a privacy boundary.
