First message ยท Nairobi
Send one true detail, not a perfect line
Start here
Pick one thing the person actually shared, say why it caught your eye, and ask one easy question. For example: โYour photo of handmade bowls caught my eye. Do you have a favorite place to see local crafts in Nairobi?โ Read it once, send it, then put the phone down. A useful message opens a conversation; it cannot make someone reply.
You have met people in real life before. An app can still make a simple hello feel like an exam. You do not need a clever joke or a long life story to start. You need a real reason for writing and room for the other person to answer.
Example conversation
A craft-market hello
In this invented example, adult Nairobi residents Kamau and Noor have not met. Noor mentions pottery in a dating profile.
This is an invented example.
- Kamau
- โYour pottery photo made me smile. Do you enjoy visiting craft markets, or do you make pieces yourself?โ
- Noor
- โI make small bowls on weekends. Have you tried it?โ
- Kamau
- โNot yet. I like seeing how each bowl turns out differently.โ
Kamau asks about a detail Noor chose to share and gives a real answer when Noor replies.
Start with what they chose to show
Look for a hobby, place or question on their profile. If the profile is very short, you can ask about something broad they have named. Do not pretend to know them from a photo or guess their job, faith or family situation.
A first message is not a request for private details. Ask about a public interest rather than where they live or work.
Use two short sentences
Say what interested you, then ask one question. โI also enjoy weekend walks. Which kind of trail do you like?โ is easier to answer than a list of five questions.
If you have not dated in years, you may say so later when it helps. You do not need to lead with an apology for being new to the app.
Love is respect encourages honesty about what you seek and boundaries for online contact. This two-sentence method is Afrolu's writing suggestion, not a rule from that source.
Choose from the answer
What is the next small step?
- A profile has a real detail
Write one true observation and one easy question.
- The profile gives little to work with
Ask one open question about an interest they named, or choose another match.
- They do not reply or push your boundary
Let silence stand, or stop the exchange if contact becomes uncomfortable.
Let the other person choose their pace
Put your phone away for a while. One unanswered message tells you only that no answer has arrived. It cannot tell you why. You can keep meeting people who want to talk without sending repeated demands to this person.
If a reply comes, answer the part they actually said. Share a little about yourself in return. A chat should not turn into an interview that only one person carries.
Keep the early chat comfortable
You may stay on the app while you decide whether to share a number. If the other person pushes for your address, photos or off-app contact, you can say no. eSafety advises limiting personal details when getting to know an online match.
A warm greeting does not require instant access to your private life. If a message is rude or makes you uneasy, you can stop replying.
If you decide to meet later, make that a new choice. The first message alone does not put a meeting on your calendar.

Sources and what they can tell us
The craft-market message and send-then-pause method are Afrolu editorial examples. Love is respect supports honest, bounded online conversation. eSafety supports guarding personal details. Neither source promises a reply.
- Love is respect: Things to think about when online dating
For a first app message, it supports honesty about what you seek and setting boundaries for digital communication before sharing a personal number.
Limit: It does not prescribe a two-sentence opener, measure message success, or say a reply will arrive. - eSafety Commissioner: Online dating: How to stay safe
For a new Nairobi chat, eSafety's advice to limit personal details supports keeping address and contact information private at first.
Limit: It does not judge Kamau's wording, predict Noor's response, or create a Nairobi-specific app rule.
Questions you may still have
Must my first message be funny?
No. A clear, kind question about a real interest is enough.
How long should I wait for a reply?
There is no rule. Keep living your day instead of treating a timer as a verdict.
Should I tell them my whole dating history?
No. Share only what helps a new conversation at the time.
Can I stay on the app?
Yes. You may keep your number and other personal details private while getting acquainted.
