First-date questions Β· For adults
A first date in Nairobi does not need your office address
Start here
Ask, 'What helps you switch off after work?' You can say what you enjoy without naming your employer, building or daily route. Meet in a busy public place, make your own way home and tell someone you trust where you will be. A good answer respects that limit.
The arts plaza is busy enough to hear other people nearby. A closed phone goes into your bag. You can enjoy the person in front of you without giving them a map of your workday.
Start after work, not at your desk
A hobby, music or a place you like to walk tells someone about you. Ask the other adult what they enjoy when the workday ends.
If a job title comes up, you may give a broad answer: 'I work in design.' That can be truthful without naming a company or office.
Keep the route home to yourself
You need not share your exact office, usual exit time, home area or car details. 'I am keeping work details private for now' is a complete answer.
Make the first meeting easy to leave
Choose a public place and a time that suits you. Arrange your own way there and back. Tell a trusted person the plan.
If the other person suggests moving to a private location, you can decline and stay with the public plan. A change of venue needs both adults to agree.
Example conversation
Sample: a private workday, a public goodbye
This invented exchange happens as two adults leave an arts plaza by separate paths.
This is an invented example.
- Wanjiku
- βI enjoyed talking about music. Would you like to see the public exhibit next Saturday?β
- Kai
- βYes. Which office should I meet you outside?β
- Wanjiku
- βLet's meet at the exhibit entrance instead. I keep my work location private when we have just met.β
The next plan stays public and specific without turning a work address into a meeting point.
Choose from the answer
Choose a next step from the boundary response
- They accept the public plan
Agree on the place and time, then travel separately.
- They ask why your office is private
You may explain briefly or repeat the limit. You do not owe your address.
- They push or follow you
End the interaction, move toward other people and contact someone you trust.
Watch how they handle a small no
A respectful date may simply move to another topic. If they keep asking for your office or follow your route after you decline, end the meeting and use a safe way home.
Let the next message be specific
If you enjoyed the date, 'Would you like to visit the public exhibit next Saturday?' says more than a vague promise. If you did not, you can say no plainly.

Questions you may still have
Is it rude to hide my employer?
No. You can share a broad field and keep the employer private until you choose otherwise.
Can I meet straight from work?
Yes, if you can keep the exact workplace and route private and make your own way to a public meeting point.
What if they offer a ride home?
You may decline. Having your own way home keeps the choice in your hands.
Does a polite person always mean a safe date?
No. A pleasant first meeting cannot prove future behaviour. Keep making choices at your own pace.
