Across countries Β· One clear agreement
Agree on exclusivity before you build around it
Start here
Ask what exclusivity means before either person changes their dating life: βDo we both want to stop dating other people while we get to know each other?β Then agree on what contact is realistic with your jobs and time zones. Exclusivity is a choice about dating others. It is not a promise to reply at work, buy tickets or share private documents.
A long call can feel close even when two calendars live far apart. But βwe are seriousβ may mean different things to each person. A good conversation separates the parts so neither adult has to guess.
Name the part you are actually agreeing to
Ask whether either of you will still date others. Say when the agreement starts and whether you want to revisit it after a few weeks. There is no special phrase that makes an agreement real; both people need to say yes to the same idea.
If one person wants to keep dating others, that answer may hurt. You can choose a nonexclusive connection or step away. Asking again and again does not turn their no into your yes.
Love is respect warns against assuming a partner shares an unstated expectation. Its advice supports the talk, while the exact words here are Afrolu's.
Example conversation
A call that separates three promises
In this invented conversation, adults Ada and Niko live in different countries and work long weeks.
This is an invented example.
- Ada
- βI like what we are building. Do we both want to stop seeing other people?β
- Niko
- βYes. I cannot promise a call every night during this project.β
- Ada
- βI can do Sundays. We can talk about visiting later, when we know the dates and cost.β
They agree on dating others, name a realistic call and leave travel for its own decision.
Choose contact you can keep
A nurse on shifts and a consultant traveling for work may not speak every evening. Compare actual free times and choose one call slot to try. If a shift changes, send a new option when you can.
Do not count every missed message as a breach of exclusivity. The agreement about other dates and the plan for calls are two different promises.
Do not use a visit as proof of commitment
Before either person spends money, discuss the purpose, dates, budget and what each person can freely decline. Keep passport images, home addresses and account details private while trust is still forming.
eSafety recommends protecting personal details when online dating. The FTC lists travel and visa stories in romance-scam money requests. Those warnings do not mean your match is dishonest; they support keeping money and identity decisions deliberate.
If someone asks you to send money for a ticket or urgent problem, pause. A relationship label does not create a duty to pay.
Choose from the answer
What did you both choose?
- Both want exclusivity
Say exactly what it includes and try a contact plan you can keep.
- Only one wants it
Decide whether a different arrangement meets your needs; neither adult must agree.
- Travel or money is being pushed
Pause that request and keep financial and identity details to yourself.

Questions you may still have
Does exclusive mean daily calls?
No. Decide call and message expectations separately around real work hours.
Can we agree before meeting in person?
You can agree on a dating boundary, but keep travel, spending and personal details separate choices.
What if a time zone makes calls hard?
Pick a time you can both try and give each other room to suggest a change.
Can either of us change our mind?
Yes. Tell the other person before acting as if the old agreement has silently ended.
