A busy week Β· A two-way choice
Look for attention you can both make time for
Start here
Do not measure emotional availability by the number of texts in a workday. Try one honest plan: βI cannot chat during my new shift, but I would like to talk after work on Thursday.β Notice whether you can each share a feeling, hear an answer and adjust a plan. A person can be busy and still make room; another can text all day and avoid a real conversation.
A new job can take your focus just as a new connection asks for it. The question is less about being online every hour and more about whether two people can offer attention they actually have.
Notice what happens when a real topic comes up
When you say you were nervous about the first week at work, does the other person ask a question and hear the answer? Do you do the same when they share something? Look for a two-way exchange, not a performance where one person always carries the talk.
One distracted evening does not define anyone. Over several talks, repeated listening, honesty about limits and repair after a missed plan tell you more than a long chat history. The Hotline describes open communication and respect for time apart as parts of a healthy relationship.
Offer time you can keep
A new shift may make midday messages rare. Say so without apology or a long excuse. βI can reply later in the eveningβ gives the other person useful information and lets them say what works for them.
If your own week is full, do not promise a daily call to prove interest. Pick one walk or call you can actually show up for. Love is respect advises being honest about what you seek and setting expectations for online contact; the exact Thursday example is Afrolu's.
Example conversation
One evening instead of twenty check-ins
In this invented conversation, adults Kofi and Hana are dating while Kofi starts a new job.
This is an invented example.
- Kofi
- βI want to keep seeing you. I cannot use my phone during the new shift, but I can make Thursday evening.β
- Hana
- βThursday works. I would rather talk properly than guess from a quiet afternoon.β
- Kofi
- βIf work changes that, I will tell you and suggest another time.β
They name real time and a repair plan. Neither has to promise all-day access.
Watch the repair after a missed plan
If a shift runs late, send a short note when you can: βI missed our call. Could Saturday work instead?β The other person may accept, suggest another time or say this pace does not suit them. All three are clearer than silence.
Also notice their repair. A person who can say βI forgot; can we try again?β is doing something different from someone who repeatedly vanishes and blames you for asking.
A replacement time matters only if it becomes a real meeting or call. Keep your own work and rest plans while you wait rather than leaving every evening empty.
Keep your own life in the picture
Dating should leave room for work, rest and friends. The Hotline includes time apart among signs of a healthy relationship. If someone treats your work hours as proof that you do not care, talk about the need beneath that reaction; you do not owe constant access.
You can decide that even a kind person has too little time for the connection you want. That is a fit question, not a diagnosis of their character.
If you notice that only one person keeps changing plans, say what you need and listen to whether the work of making time can be shared.
Choose from the answer
What is the pattern, not the text count?
- You both make a little time
Keep the plan small and notice how the talks feel.
- One plan keeps changing
Ask whether a different time would work and watch the answer.
- You cannot discuss needs safely
Step back and seek support if you feel pressured or afraid to speak.

Sources and what they can tell us
The listening examples, Thursday plan and repair test are Afrolu editorial advice. The Hotline supports open dialogue and respect for time apart. Love is respect supports honesty about communication expectations. Neither source turns message frequency into a diagnosis or guarantees a particular pair will fit.
- National Domestic Violence Hotline: Healthy relationships
For a busy new-job relationship, it names open communication and respect for separate time as healthy, so constant availability is not the measure used here.
Limit: It does not define an acceptable number of texts or diagnose either fictional adult as emotionally available. - Love is respect: Things to think about when online dating
Its advice to state communication expectations and be honest about what you seek supports naming a workable call or reply window.
Limit: It does not say Thursday evening is ideal, require daily contact, or promise that a new shift will fit both people.
Questions you may still have
Am I unavailable if I cannot text at work?
No. A work limit says little by itself. Explain what time you can give and listen to their needs.
What if they want daily calls?
You can say what you can honestly offer. Either person may decide the difference is too large.
Does one cancelled call mean they do not care?
No. Notice whether they explain, repair and keep later plans over time.
Can a person text often and still avoid closeness?
Yes. Count the quality of honest, two-way talk and actions as well as messages.
