Relationship clarity Β· Across distance
A short visit can include a clear relationship talk
Start here
Ask before the last train or airport goodbye. Try: 'I like seeing you. While we are apart, are we each free to date other people, or are we dating only each other?' Then say what you want and listen. You can agree on one next call and leave a bigger label for later, but do not quietly treat an unclear answer as a yes.
A weekend visit has a start and an end. The walk before you part can be a good time to ask what will happen in the weeks between visits. It is easier to talk while neither person is running for a train.
Separate the questions hidden inside 'what are we?'
You might mean: Will we keep in touch? Are we seeing other people? Who will plan the next visit? These are different questions. Ask the one you need answered first.
Do not assume a shared weekend means a shared rule. Both adults deserve to say what they actually want, even if the answers differ.
Choose a moment that leaves room for an answer
Bring it up on a walk or during a quiet pause, not as one person leaves. 'Could we talk for a few minutes about what happens after this weekend?' gives them a choice and time to think.
If they need time, agree on when to return to the question. 'Let's talk on Wednesday' is clearer than 'we will see.'
Example conversation
Sample: a question before the bag is packed
This invented conversation happens on a public walk during a weekend visit.
This is an invented example.
- Mara
- βI have enjoyed this weekend. Before we part, can I ask whether we are still dating other people?β
- Kwame
- βI have been, and I am not ready to agree to exclusivity yet.β
- Mara
- βThank you for telling me. I want to move toward dating one person. I will think about what works for me before we plan another visit.β
They get a real answer without either person pretending to agree. Mara keeps the next travel decision in her own hands.
Say your own preference plainly
If you want exclusivity, say what that means to you: not dating other people while you explore this connection. If you are not ready for that, say so too. Avoid using a label as a shortcut for a rule you have not discussed.
Travel can make a weekend feel intense. You do not owe a promise because someone bought a ticket. Each person can decide how much time and money a future visit deserves.
Choose from the answer
The next step depends on the answer
- You both want the same rule
Say it in simple words and choose one next call before planning travel.
- One person is unsure
Agree on a date to talk again, or decide that waiting does not work for you.
- You want different things
Thank them for being clear. Choose whether further dating fits your needs.
When your answers differ, make the next choice yours
They may enjoy you and still want to date others. You may want more certainty. Neither answer must be argued into changing on the river path.
You can say, 'I need a relationship that moves toward exclusivity. I will think about whether this fits me.' Take time. Do not book another trip to avoid a hard answer.
Make the small agreement easy to remember
If you both want another step, name it: a call next week, who will suggest a date, and whether you are dating others meanwhile. One message after the trip can confirm what you each heard.
If nothing clear was agreed, ask again once. Ongoing uncertainty is also a reason to step back.

Questions you may still have
Should we talk at the airport?
Try earlier in the visit. A rushed goodbye leaves little room for a careful answer.
Does a weekend together mean exclusivity?
No. Ask directly. People may understand the same weekend differently.
Can I ask for a call without a label?
Yes. A next call is a clear small step. Be honest if you also need an answer about dating others.
What if they say 'let us see'?
Ask what that means in practice and when you will talk again. You can decide how long you are willing to wait.
