More than one connection Β· Clear words

Say whether you are exclusive before anyone guesses

Start here

If exclusivity has not been agreed, say that plainly when a relationship may be growing: β€˜I enjoy seeing you, and I am still getting to know other people. Are you comfortable with that?’ You can be honest without naming, ranking or sharing private details about anyone else. If one person wants exclusivity, listen and decide whether you can offer it.

A second coffee date is not a secret contract. Yet silence can let two people build different pictures of what the dates mean.

First decide what you can honestly offer

Are you open to exclusivity soon, or are you still exploring? You do not need an exact deadline, but you should know whether you can accept a request to date only one person now.

Do not call a connection exclusive to keep it comfortable while making other plans. If your answer is β€˜not yet,’ give that answer kindly.

Love is respect says unstated expectations can cause confusion. A spoken answer lets each adult decide with the same basic facts.

Example conversation

Two people can answer differently

In this invented Nairobi walk, adults Wanjiru and Malik have met twice after years away from dating.

This is an invented example.

Wanjiru
β€œI like our talks. I am still meeting other people; we have not agreed to be exclusive. How do you feel about that?”
Malik
β€œI would prefer to date one person if we keep going.”
Wanjiru
β€œThank you for telling me. I need to think before I promise that.”

Wanjiru gives the key fact, and Malik can state his need without learning anyone else's identity.

Give the truth without exposing other people

You can say β€˜I am seeing other people’ without giving names, screenshots, addresses or stories they told you in confidence. Your date needs to know your availability, not another person's private life.

If asked β€˜How many?’, answer at a level you are comfortable with, or explain why you will keep others' details private. Do not use privacy as a way to dodge the main question about exclusivity.

Keep each meeting plan separate and clear

When meeting an online match in Nairobi, use a public first meeting and tell someone you trust where and when you plan to go. eSafety recommends sharing that plan. Do not share another date's live location or reuse their private details to impress someone new.

If dates begin to overlap with commitments you cannot keep, slow down. You can cancel a plan honestly rather than inventing a story about where you were.

If a person says they want a different arrangement, believe them. You may agree, keep dating without exclusivity only with their knowledge, or part ways.

Choose from the answer

What can you both agree to now?

  • Both are comfortable keeping it open

Say what that means and revisit it if feelings or plans change.

  • One asks for exclusivity

Offer it only if you truly intend to stop dating others.

  • The arrangement does not fit

End the dating connection kindly instead of making a promise you cannot keep.

Sources and what they can tell us

The dialogue, privacy wording and three possible agreements are Afrolu suggestions for this situation. Love is respect supports discussing expectations and limits. eSafety supports a basic meeting plan. No source sets an exclusivity deadline or asks for another person's data.

  • Love is respect: Boundaries & expectations

Its discussion of unspoken expectations supports an early conversation about whether seeing several people fits both adults' plans.

Limit: It sets no allowed number of dates or partners and cannot decide whether Wanjiru and Malik should become exclusive.
  • Love is respect: What are my boundaries?

Its explanation of personal limits supports each person stating what dating arrangement they can freely accept.

Limit: It does not require sharing other people's names, messages or live whereabouts as proof of honesty.
  • eSafety Commissioner: Online dating: How to stay safe

Its first-meeting advice supports telling a trusted person where and when a Nairobi meeting with an online match is planned.

Limit: It does not make a public venue risk-free or prescribe how many people a later-life dater may meet.

Questions you may still have

Must I tell a date everyone's name?

No. Be honest about your status while protecting others' private details.

Does a third date mean we are exclusive?

No date count creates an agreement. Ask and answer directly.

Can I change my mind later?

Yes. Say so before acting on a different agreement.

What if the other person will not discuss it?

You can ask once clearly, then decide whether you want to keep dating without an answer.
