If every date is a maybe, ask for a real plan
Start here
Benching is a useful name for friendly contact that never becomes a clear plan. Do not decide someone is doing it on purpose from one late reply. Offer one short meeting time that fits your workday and ask for a place and time you can both confirm. If they cannot offer a real alternative, use that time for your own plans. You may still like them and choose to meet people who can make room for you.
It is Monday in Nairobi. Amina has one free lunch hour near her Upper Hill office on Wednesday. Her match has said, 'We should see each other soon,' for the third week. She cannot keep moving client calls to make space for a date that has no time or place.
Read the calendar, not the compliment
Write down what happened without adding a story about why. Did either adult suggest a date? Was it confirmed? If a meeting was canceled, did the person offer another time? Three warm chats are still chats; a confirmed 45-minute coffee near work is a plan.
A demanding job, a delayed journey across Nairobi or family duty can disrupt a real plan. That does not make somebody careless. The useful difference is whether they offer another workable time after you have said what you want.
You do not need the label benching to set a limit. Love is respect explains that people cannot read unspoken expectations. Saying you want to meet is clearer than waiting for a stranger to infer it.
Offer a choice they can answer
Try, 'I can do a short coffee near Upper Hill on Wednesday at one, or after work in Westlands on Friday at six. Does either suit you?' Two workable choices are enough. Let the other person suggest an alternative if both fail.
Choose a busy public venue away from your exact workplace, arrange your own way home, and tell a trusted person the plan. RAINN recommends a public first meeting, sharing plans and keeping control of transport. You do not need to reveal your office or daily route to arrange coffee.
Choose a time by which you need a reply, such as Tuesday evening, for your own planning. You need not announce an ultimatum. If nothing is confirmed, use the lunch hour for your own errand or rest.
Example conversation
A lunch-hour offer instead of a fourth maybe
Invented Nairobi exchange between adult professionals Amina and Peter.
This is an invented example.
- Amina
- βI would like to meet. I can do a short coffee near Upper Hill Wednesday at one or Westlands Friday after work. Does either work?β
- Peter
- βI cannot make either and I do not know when I will be free.β
- Amina
- βThanks for being clear. I am looking for a date I can plan, so I will step back.β
Peter may be busy or uncertain. Amina does not need to know which before protecting her time.
A no, a delay and a maybe are different answers
'I cannot date this month' is honest information. 'Wednesday is full; I can do Friday after work' is an alternative. 'Soon, dear' with no day gives you no meeting to accept. Treat each answer as it is rather than turning it into a promise.
A person may want companionship by message while you want an in-person serious relationship. Neither wish is wrong; the mismatch is worth naming. 'I enjoy chatting, but I am looking to meet. I will step back for now' is a complete answer.
Choose from the answer
What came back after the clear ask?
- A day and place
Confirm the meeting and use ordinary first-date safety steps.
- A real limit and no plan
Believe the limit; choose whether message-only contact fits you.
- Another vague promise or a money request
Free your calendar; do not send money to create a date.
Never pay to make an uncertain meeting happen
If an online match asks you to send fare, a work emergency payment or a ticket price before you have met, stop the money conversation. The FTC describes how romance scammers can use distance and supposed travel costs to ask for money. The warning is about a request, not proof that every delayed match is a scammer.
If you already paid, contact the payment provider quickly and ask what recovery steps are possible. Tell someone you trust. The FTC's reporting route is for the United States; Kenyan readers can seek local reporting help.
Make space for people who can show up
Amina can close the chat kindly and still leave the future undecided. If the person later proposes a clear date, she can decide then, around the work and people already in her week. She does not owe a movable work calendar because she once said she was interested.
The practical test is simple: after a direct request, is there a plan both people freely chose? Serious interest may begin with words, but a first meeting needs a day and place.

Sources and what they can tell us
Amina, Peter and their workday invitation are invented Afrolu examples. The sources support clear expectations and first-meeting precautions; the lunch-hour deadline is Afrolu's planning suggestion, not a test of Peter's motive.
- Love is respect: Boundaries and expectations
It explains why naming expectations plainly helps partners avoid assuming they mean the same thing.
Limit: It does not define benching or prove why Peter cannot choose a date. - RAINN: Tips for Safer Dating: Online and In-Person
It recommends a busy first-meeting place, sharing the plan with someone trusted and controlling your own transport.
Limit: Its guidance does not certify a Nairobi venue or tell Amina why Peter cannot agree to a workday coffee. - Federal Trade Commission: What to know about romance scams
It documents online romance stories involving distance, tickets and requests for money.
Limit: It does not mean every delayed date is fraud; US reporting instructions may not apply in Kenya.
Questions you may still have
Is a slow reply benching?
Not by itself. Check whether clear plans are made and kept over time.
Should I send more than one invitation?
You may, but you do not have to. One direct ask can give you enough to decide.
Could someone serious have a busy month?
Yes. They can say so and propose an alternative when they know one.
May I date others while we chat?
Unless you both freely agreed otherwise, do not assume exclusivity. Say what you want if that question matters.
