Long distance Β· Call costs
The video call used too much data. What now?
Check what your own mobile or internet plan charges before arranging another long video call. You can tell the other person what you are comfortable spending and ask what works for them. A shorter call, an audio call, trusted Wi-Fi or a written message may suit you both. Prices and app settings differ, so check your provider rather than assuming any option is free. Either adult may choose to pause or decline a format that does not work.
After a long first video date, Ekon notices that his mobile data balance is much lower than he expected. He likes talking with Fola, who lives in another city. He feels embarrassed to mention cost because the connection is still casual. Their next decision is not a promise about the relationship; it is how to talk without a bill either person regrets.
Find the cost that applies to you
Ekon can look at his provider's current plan or ask the provider how his chosen call will be charged. Wi-Fi, mobile data and ordinary phone calls can have different costs. A home connection is not always unlimited or free.
He does not need to disclose his income or show Fola his account balance. 'A long video call is outside my budget' is enough information for a practical choice.
A call-cost conversation
A practical message about the next call
Invented messages between adult daters Ekon and Fola.
- Ekon
- βI enjoyed our call. A long video call uses more of my plan than I can spend. Would a shorter audio call work for you?β
- Fola
- βI use captions, so audio alone is difficult. Could we try a shorter captioned call after we both check our plans?β
- Ekon
- βYes. I will check the cost first, and we can choose another way if it does not fit.β
Each adult names a real limit and keeps the choice open.
Compare ways to talk
Ofcom says turning video off and using audio can use less of an internet connection than video in its broadband guidance. That does not tell Ekon the cost of a specific app or mobile plan. He can check the actual terms, then ask whether a shorter audio call or a written exchange suits both adults.
Accessibility matters too. If Fola uses captions, lip-reading or another feature, an audio-only call may not work for her. They can ask what each person needs before choosing a format.
Two plans to compare
- Live conversation
- Check the cost and access needs for the exact app, device and connection.
- Messages at your own time
- Agree when a reply can wait and what each person can comfortably use.
- Neither fits now
- Pause or close the conversation without a payment demand.
Keep payment separate from affection
Fola may offer to contribute to a call. Ekon can accept or decline; neither person should use payment to demand contact. A request for passwords, verification codes or bank access is not needed to agree on a call.
A quiet week can be a choice, too. They may decide that their preferred ways of staying in touch do not fit. That does not make either person unkind.
Pick a workable format
What did you find?
- A format fits both budgets and needs
Agree on that format and its length.
- One person needs a different feature
Discuss an accessible option before deciding.
- No option is comfortable
Pause or stop; neither person owes the other a costly call.

Questions about call costs
Is audio always cheaper?
Not necessarily. Apps, providers and plans differ. Check the charges that apply to your connection.
Does a shorter call mean less interest?
No. Cost, access and time can shape a call without revealing someone's feelings.
Must I share my phone bill?
No. You can state the limit you are comfortable with without sharing account details.
What if captions are important to one person?
Ask which formats provide the feature they need; do not assume an audio-only call works for everyone.
