Long distance and serious? Talk about a move without a deadline
Start here
If a long-distance partner asks you to move, name what each person would change: job, income, home, support nearby and permission to work. A visit can help you see ordinary days together, but it is a visit, not a promise to relocate. Check current work and travel rules with official sources before setting a moving date. You can care for someone and still say, 'I am not ready to leave my job.'
Lerato works in London and Sefu works in Nairobi. They have met twice and enjoy being together. Sefu asks whether she could move within three months. Lerato cares about him, but she would have to leave a job and home she chose. At an airport table, she asks what the move would cost each of them before giving an answer.
Write down what each person would give up
Lerato would leave her current job, income and nearby friends. Would Sefu change his work or home too, or would all the change fall on her? She can ask without blaming him. They may find that neither can move this year.
A fair talk names both adults' limits. Love is respect supports clear requests and listening to a different answer. It does not decide whose career should come first.
A move has four separate costs
- WorkWhat income or career path changes for each adult?
- HomeWhat home and nearby support would each person leave?
- RulesWhat current work and travel requirements need official checks?
- TimeWhat can the next ordinary visit show before anyone commits?
A plan you can check
A move is a separate answer
Invented conversation between adult partners Lerato and Sefu at an airport seating area.
- Sefu
- βCould you move to Nairobi by March?β
- Lerato
- βThat would mean leaving my job and home. I am not ready to promise that.β
- Sefu
- βI understand. Could we spend normal days together on the next visit and then talk again?β
- Lerato
- βYes. We can plan the visit. After that, we each need to check our work and travel options.β
They can plan a visit while leaving the job and home decision open.
Keep a visit separate from a move
Lerato and Sefu can plan another visit without agreeing on where they will live. During it, they can spend an ordinary workday together: food shopping, a tired evening and a changed plan. These moments may tell them more than a special holiday.
The visit still cannot answer what a move will be like. It is one small check, not a trial contract or a demand for a decision before the flight home.
Do not let 'serious' mean 'move now' by default
For Lerato, serious may mean honest plans and exclusivity. For Sefu, it may mean living in one city soon. They can name those differences. A promise to keep dating is separate from a promise to resign, move or share a home.
Lerato can say, 'I want to keep learning about us, but I am not ready to leave my job.' Sefu can say how that answer affects him without setting a deadline for her.
Before a big promise
What is still unknown about a move?
- You have not lived ordinary days together
Plan a visit you can each manage without calling it a moving trial.
- One person would lose income or support
Name that cost and look for other choices before anyone resigns.
- Work or travel rules are unclear
Check current official requirements and qualified local advice before promising a date.
- A partner demands a move now
You can say no to the deadline and decide whether the relationship still works for you.
Check facts before choosing a moving date
Work permission, visas, housing and employment terms depend on the place and the person's situation. Each adult should check current official sources and qualified local advice before making a legal or career decision. This page cannot decide those facts for them.
After the next visit and those checks, they can ask again whether a move is fair and possible. If the answer remains no, they can choose to continue at a distance or stop. That is still a real decision.

Sources and what they can tell us
Lerato, Sefu and the airport conversation are invented. The visit and relocation discussion are Afrolu examples; sources support clear expectations and respect, not immigration or career advice.
- Love is respect: Boundaries and expectations
It explains why partners should name different expectations instead of assuming they mean the same thing.
Limit: It does not set a timetable for Lerato to move or decide which career matters more. - Love is respect: What is respect in a healthy relationship?
It describes listening to a partner's feelings and honoring their choices as parts of respect.
Limit: It does not show that a move would be safe, legal or fair for these two adults. - Love is respect: Get what you want and need from your relationship
It supports asking clearly for a need while recognizing the other person may have a different answer.
Limit: It cannot advise on visas, work permits, relocation law or career contracts.
Questions before moving for a partner
Must I move to prove I am serious?
No. A relationship label does not take away your choice about work and home.
Should we visit again first?
A visit can show more of normal life together. It cannot guarantee that moving will work.
Can we stay in separate cities for now?
Yes, if both adults want that. Say what each can and cannot promise.
Who checks visa and work rules?
Each adult should check current official rules for their own situation. This guide cannot give immigration or employment advice.
