First-date questions Β· For adults

You have one free weekend hour. What should you ask?

Start here

Say how long you can stay, then ask one adult question: 'What are you hoping to make time for with someone new?' Share your answer too. You can mention that you are a parent without giving your child's name, school, photo or daily routine. An hour can be enough to decide whether you want another talk.

At a Saturday makers market, the time on your watch is a useful limit. You do not need to apologise for it. The date is between two adults; your child's life can stay outside the conversation.

Give the hour a beginning and end

'I can stay until three' is clear and kind. Choose a public place and let a trusted person know where you will be.

A short date is not a lesser date. It can tell you whether talk feels mutual and whether another meeting is worth arranging.

Example conversation

Sample: a market hour with a clear ending

This invented exchange shows a parent naming a limit and asking about adult hopes.

This is an invented example.

Lebo
β€œI can stay until three. What are you hoping to make time for with someone new?”
Alex
β€œI would like to get to know someone slowly and see whether we enjoy ordinary weekends.”
Lebo
β€œThat sounds close to what I want. I am a parent, so I plan my free time carefully. Could we talk again next week?”

Lebo names an adult need and a time limit without giving a child's private details.

Ask what they want from dating now

'What do you hope to make room for with someone new?' gives the other adult room to answer. You can say whether you want to go slowly, meet casually or build toward a relationship.

Listen for an answer you can understand, not a perfect line. If your hopes differ, you can say so without arguing.

Keep a child's details off the table

It is enough to say that you have parenting responsibilities. Do not share names, school, photos, pick-up times or where your child is staying with someone you just met.

Choose from the answer

Use the hour to choose your next one

  • You both want another talk

Offer one day and time that fits your parenting plan.

  • Your hopes differ

Thank them for being clear. You can leave the date at its planned end.

  • They press for child details

Say those details are private. End the meeting if the limit is ignored.

Leave with a plan that fits your life

If you want another date, offer one time you can truly keep. If the other person needs more time than you can give, that is a useful fit question, not a fault in either adult.

Sources and what they can tell us

The market hour and questions are invented Afrolu examples. eSafety supports protecting children's details and telling a trusted person about a first meeting. The Hotline supports honest talk and boundaries. Neither source decides when a parent should introduce a child.

Questions you may still have

Should I say I am a parent?

You may, if it matters to your dating plans. You can keep your child's private information to yourself.

Is one hour rude?

No. Tell the other person the time when you arrange the date.

What if they ask to meet my child?

A first date is too early to promise that. You can say, 'I keep my child's life separate while I get to know someone.'

What if the date is going well when I must leave?

Leave at the time you chose and, if you want, suggest a later call or date.
