Returning to dating across distance? Make the first call small

Start here

Ask for a short call before travel: 'What would make this first conversation easy for you?' Tell them your own pace too. You can talk about a normal day without sharing an address, money details or a full story of your past. Decide about another call before a journey.

The phone rings while your travel bag is still closed. You are allowed to enjoy a new voice and still leave the bag where it is. A good first call should make the next choice clearer, not larger.

Choose a pace that feels like yours

You can say, 'I am getting used to dating again. I would like twenty minutes today.' You do not have to explain every year since your last date.

Ask about the day they already live

Try, 'What do you look forward to after a long week?' It may lead to friends, work, rest or a hobby. Answer it yourself so the call is a conversation rather than an interview.

A pleasant answer is one small piece of information. It does not tell you whether someone will be careful with your trust.

Keep the call easy to end

Choose a time and say when you need to go. If you are using a dating app, you can stay there until you choose otherwise.

Example conversation

Sample: the bag stays closed

This invented exchange happens on an audio call before either adult books travel.

This is an invented example.

Maya
β€œI have not dated for a long time. Could we keep today to twenty minutes and see if we want another call?”
Theo
β€œYes. What would you enjoy talking about first?”
Maya
β€œWhat makes a good free afternoon for you? I like visiting the small garden near me.”

Maya sets a time and asks an ordinary question. Nothing about the call requires a journey.

A voice is not a safety certificate

A call may help you hear how someone talks and listens. It does not prove the name, photo or story behind an account. You may slow down when details do not fit.

Do not treat a request for a video call as an order. You can choose whether, when and how to appear on camera.

Leave money and travel out of the first promise

If someone asks you to fund a ticket or solve an urgent money problem, pause the conversation. You do not owe payment to show interest.

Choose from the answer

After the call, what is the smallest good step?

  • You both enjoyed talking

Suggest one next call. Learn more before arranging travel.

  • You need more time

Say so. You can leave the match open or end it without a long explanation.

  • They push for money or a trip

Stop planning. Do not send money or personal travel details to prove you care.

Offer one next call if you want one

'I liked talking. Could we speak again next week?' is enough. A later call can explore meeting in a busy public place, with each adult controlling their own journey.
