First-date questions · For adults

Before a long-distance first date, ask about the small plan

Start here

Start with, 'Would a short call this week feel good to you?' If you later meet, ask where you could meet in public and how each of you would get there. Share your city if useful, but keep your home address and full travel plan private. One good call does not require a ticket.

Distance can make a simple date sound like a big journey. You can learn whether conversation feels easy before deciding to cross a city or a border. Give the first step a small, clear shape.

Let a call do one job

Ask for a call at a time you can keep: 'Could we talk for twenty minutes on Thursday?' You can speak on the dating app while you decide how much contact information to share.

Use the call to learn how each of you spends a normal week. It cannot prove identity or promise that an in-person date will feel the same.

Name a city, not a front door

'I live near Nairobi' is enough to discuss distance. You do not need to name your building, workplace, usual commute or the hours your home is empty.

If they press for an exact address, say, 'I am keeping that private while we get to know each other.' Notice whether they can accept that answer.

Example conversation

Sample: two cities, one call

This invented conversation shows two adults deciding whether to talk again before travel.

This is an invented example.

Amina
“I like this conversation. I live in a different city. Could we have a short call on Thursday before talking about a visit?”
Daniel
“Thursday works. Would you want to meet if the call goes well?”
Amina
“Maybe. I would want a public place and my own journey there. We can decide after the call.”

They agree to one next conversation and leave travel to a later decision.

Make the possible meeting ordinary

If you both want to meet, suggest a busy public place and a short time. Each adult can make their own way there and home. Tell a trusted person the plan before you go.

Leave travel as a later choice

Do not buy a ticket to show that you care. Ask whether a next call makes sense first. A person may be interested and still prefer to meet only after more conversation.

If one of you visits a city for another reason, that does not make a private home visit part of the date. Say what meeting you are willing to have.

Choose from the answer

Choose by the response you get

  • They welcome a short call

Pick a time you can both keep. Share only the contact details you choose.

  • They want a meeting now

You may suggest a public place and separate travel, or keep talking until you feel ready.

  • They demand your address or ticket

Repeat your limit once. End contact if they keep pushing.

Judge the next step by what happened

Did they make room for the call and let you keep a limit? That is useful to notice. One pleasant talk is still only one talk.

Sources and what they can tell us

The call and travel script is Afrolu editorial advice. eSafety supports privacy and choosing when to meet. RAINN supports a public place, a trusted contact and control of transport. Neither source can approve a specific person or trip.

Questions you may still have

Is a video call proof that someone is safe?

No. A call can help you talk, but it cannot prove identity or future behaviour.

Do I need to tell them my exact address?

No. A city or broad area is enough for an early distance conversation.

Who should pay for a first trip?

Do not make a money promise on a first date. Each adult should decide what travel, if any, they can arrange safely.

What if I am already visiting their city?

You may still meet in public for a short time and make your own way back.
