Exclusive dating · Existing plans
They asked to be exclusive. You have another date booked.
Start here
Do not say you are exclusive today while keeping another date on the calendar. You can say yes and cancel that date kindly, or say you are not ready to begin exclusivity until after it. The person asking may accept or decline either answer. If you are unsure, say so. No one needs the third person's private details; each person needs an honest answer about what you will do.
At the end of a Tuesday walk, David asks Esi whether they can date only each other. Esi likes him. She has already agreed to dinner with Kofi on Thursday, before David asked. Her work week is crowded, but the calendar is not the real problem. She needs to decide which promise she can keep.
Separate an invitation from an agreement
Esi has not broken an exclusive promise by making Thursday's plan before one existed. But if she accepts David's request for exclusivity starting now, Thursday's date no longer fits. She should not rely on 'I made it before we talked' as a loophole.
She can ask David what he means by exclusive if the word is unclear. The immediate question is simple: will either of them date someone else from the start they agree on?
When would a yes begin?
Which promise can you keep?
- Exclusive from today
Agree in words, then cancel the other date promptly and kindly.
- Keep the already-booked date
Tell the person asking that exclusivity has not begun; let them decide.
- You do not know yet
Say you are unsure. Do not use a comforting yes while you decide.
If you want to begin now, clear the other date
Esi can tell David, 'I want to date only you from today. I have another date planned, and I will cancel it.' Then she can send Kofi a prompt, kind cancellation. She need not give him David's name, screenshot the chat or ask him to wait as a backup.
A possible message is, 'I cannot make Thursday and do not want to reschedule. Thank you for the invitation.' Kofi may be disappointed. A clear no gives him his evening back.
Two honest replies
Two replies to one Tuesday question
Invented alternative replies from adult dater Esi to David; she would send only the one that is true.
- If Esi chooses yes now
- “I want to date only you starting today. I had another date booked, and I will cancel it.”
- If Esi chooses not yet
- “I like seeing you, but I have another date planned and am not ready to agree to exclusivity today.”
The start date changes Esi's next action. Both replies let David choose honestly.
If you want to keep Thursday, say not yet
Esi may want to honor Thursday's plan or simply need more time. She can tell David, 'I like you, but I am not ready to agree to dating only each other now. I have another date planned. If that is hard for you, I understand.' David can choose whether to continue dating under those terms.
She should not promise a future yes to soften the answer. If they talk again after Thursday, each can make a new choice. A date with Kofi is not a secret test of David.
Do not make third people into proof
David does not need Kofi's name, messages or phone number to understand Esi's answer. Esi does not need to inspect David's phone either. The test is whether both adults say the same thing and then act that way.
Love is respect describes honest, mutual expectations. It does not set a universal deadline for exclusivity. Afrolu's two options give this particular calendar conflict a clear answer.

Sources and what they can tell us
Esi, David, Kofi and their calendar are invented. The cancel-now or agree-later choice is Afrolu's practical advice, not a rule from a cited publisher.
- Love is respect: Boundaries and expectations
It supports saying what each person expects and agreeing on a boundary together.
Limit: It does not say Esi must cancel a date or set when exclusivity begins. - Love is respect: What is respect in a healthy relationship?
It identifies honesty, listening and honoring boundaries as parts of respect.
Limit: It cannot predict how David or Kofi will feel about an honest answer. - Love is respect: Get what you want and need from your relationship
It supports a clear request and the other person's freedom to decline.
Limit: It does not provide a special rule for an appointment booked before an exclusivity talk.
Questions when another date is booked
Was it wrong to book another date before this talk?
No exclusive agreement existed then. Be truthful about what you choose now.
Do I owe the other date a reason for canceling?
A clear, timely cancellation is useful. You do not have to share another person's identity.
Can exclusivity start next week?
Only if both adults agree to that start and understand what happens before it.
Should I show my calendar as proof?
No. Explain the choice you are making; private schedules and messages need not be inspected.
