Your date stands close at the ATM. What now?

Pause and keep your PIN private

Your PIN is the private number you use with your bank card. Ask for space before entering it, and stop if your date will not step back. If you think someone saw the number, contact your bank through a known official channel.

Adult dater Tumi is meeting Rudo for a simple weekend coffee after several years away from dating. Tumi stops at a cash machine. Rudo moves close enough to see the keypad. Tumi can enjoy meeting someone and still ask for space around a private banking detail.

Ask for room before you enter the number

Try: “I will be a moment. Please wait over there while I use the machine.” You do not need to explain why your PIN is private. Cover the keypad, including when the person waiting is someone you like.

Visa advises covering the keypad and contacting your bank if you suspect someone obtained your PIN. The advice applies to the cardholder’s own decision; a single movement does not reveal a date’s intent.

If they stay beside you

You can cancel before entering the number, retrieve your card and step away if doing so is safe. Consider a different machine or a different payment method. Do not hand over the card or say your PIN aloud to avoid an awkward moment.

If the machine holds your card or you cannot safely retrieve it, follow the bank’s own instructions. Move to a safer public place and ask someone you trust or local emergency services for help if you feel threatened.

Think the PIN was seen?

Contact the card issuer promptly using its official app or the number on the back of your card or a statement. Explain what happened and follow its instructions about changing the PIN or securing the card. Check your account and report any unfamiliar transaction.

Do not use a contact number your date gives you without checking it independently. Your bank’s procedures and your rights depend on the card and country.

Notice the response, not a single gesture

Someone may step close without thinking. A respectful response is to give you room when asked. If they keep insisting on seeing the keypad, end the transaction and reconsider whether you want to continue the date.

Questions about your PIN

Is standing close always proof of a scam?

No. It does not prove intent. You can still protect your PIN and notice whether your request is respected.

Should I tell my date the number if they offer to help?

Keep your PIN private. Ask the bank for help through its official channel.

What if I see a transaction I do not recognize?

Report it promptly to your bank using its official contact details and follow its instructions.
