Dating red flags · Money and distance

A long-distance date asks you to co-sign a loan. What now?

Pause before signing

You can say no or take time to understand the request. Co-signing generally means agreeing to repay a loan if the borrower does not. The exact duties depend on the agreement and local law. Contact the lender using details you find independently and ask a qualified local adviser to explain the document before signing. Pressure is a reason to pause; it does not prove fraud.

What co-signing can mean

A co-signer adds their name to a loan and agrees to take on obligations under its terms. The US Federal Trade Commission explains that a co-signer may have to pay if the borrower does not. Rules and consequences vary by place; ask a qualified local financial or legal adviser to explain the actual agreement.

Ask for the full terms, payment schedule, fees and any security required. Do not rely on a summary from the person requesting your signature.

Check separately

Find the lender’s contact details through its own official website or a local regulator, rather than using a number sent by your date. Ask the lender how the request works and what you would owe. A genuine lender and document do not make a loan affordable or make signing right for you.

Your answer can be no

Ada might say, “I am not able to sign a loan for someone else.” She does not have to justify that decision. If her date repeatedly insists, rushes her or threatens to end the relationship, she can stop the conversation and seek support from someone she trusts.

If you have already signed

Keep copies of what you signed and contact the lender through independently checked details. Ask a qualified adviser in the relevant place about your obligations and options. Do not assume a signature can be cancelled or that one country’s rules apply everywhere.

Questions about signing a loan

Does asking me to co-sign prove my date is a scammer?

No. The request alone does not prove fraud, but you can decline or pause and check independently.

Can I sign just to help without taking on debt?

Do not assume that. Ask the lender and a qualified local adviser what the exact terms mean.

What if I already signed?

Keep your documents and seek help from the lender and a qualified adviser in the relevant jurisdiction.
