Your date asks you to pretend you were their manager
You can say no if a date asks you to claim you supervised them when you did not. You may offer truthful help, such as reviewing a public job listing, only if you want to and it is appropriate. Do not imply that you worked together if you did not. Notice whether the person accepts your answer or turns the request into a test of affection. One request does not prove a scam or tell you the person's motive.
Diaspora professional Imani has met Chidi twice. He is applying for a job and asks her to tell a recruiter she was his manager. They have never worked together. Imani wants to be kind, but she cannot honestly describe his performance as an employee. Her immediate choice is what she can truthfully say, not whether she must solve his application.
Separate what you know from what you do not
Imani knows Chidi as a date. She has not supervised his work. She can say, 'I cannot say I was your manager because I was not.' She does not need to invent a story to soften that answer.
Acas explains that employment references in the UK must be fair and accurate. Its guidance is about UK employment practice; it does not decide the law in Imani's country or whether she should write any reference.
Three separate offers
A false work claimDecline to say you supervised someone when you did not.
Truthful helpOffer only help you genuinely want and are able to give.
No helpYou can decline without replacing the request with another favor.
A truthful alternative is optional
If Imani wants to help, she might read a public job listing with Chidi or suggest that he ask someone who actually knows his work. She should not claim to know his job performance from two dates. Chidi can ask an employer what kinds of reference it accepts.
Acas describes different types of reference and suggests asking the receiving employer what it will accept when an applicant cannot obtain one. A character reference is not a way to pretend to be a former supervisor.
A truthful reply
A clear answer about the reference
Invented conversation between adult daters Imani and Chidi.
- Chidi
- “Could you tell the recruiter you were my manager?”
- Imani
- “I cannot say that; we have never worked together. You could ask the employer what reference they accept.”
- Chidi
- “I understand. I will ask them.”
Imani states the fact without promising another kind of help.
Notice whether no stays an answer
Chidi may feel disappointed and accept Imani's answer. If he says she must lie to prove she cares, she can repeat her boundary or end contact. She does not need to decide whether he is a bad person before refusing a false claim.
If someone uses threats or contacts Imani's workplace without permission, she can seek support through appropriate workplace or local channels. A guide cannot determine the safest response in every situation.
Keep other people out of a promise you did not make
Imani should not give a recruiter her employer's name, a colleague's details or a work address as part of an invented employment story. She can choose whether to discuss a real introduction through an ordinary process, but she does not owe access to her workplace.

It suggests asking the receiving employer what alternatives it will accept.
Limit: It does not authorize a false work history or promise a job. - Love is respect: Boundaries and expectations
It supports discussing boundaries and respecting each person's choice.
Limit: It cannot determine Chidi's motive or Imani's legal obligations.
Questions about a work reference
Does asking for a false reference prove someone is a scammer?
No. The request is enough for you to decline; it does not establish their motive.
Can I give a character reference?
Only if you want to, can be truthful and the receiving employer accepts that type. Practices vary.
Do I owe a referral instead?
No. A referral is a separate choice that can affect other people and your workplace.
What law applies to my situation?
Rules depend on the places and people involved. Seek qualified local advice for a legal question.
