Distance and privacy · For adult students

Your room address can wait, even when the date is far away

Start here

Share a city or broad area, not your room number, class timetable or ticket code. You can say, 'I would meet at the public station café for an hour, and I will arrange my own trip.' If a visit needs an overnight stay you cannot arrange independently, wait. You never need to pay for their journey or host them to prove you care.

A screen can make someone in another city feel close. A trip is still a real trip, with money, timing and a safe way home. Keep the plan small enough that you control each part of it.

Give enough information to meet, not to find your room

'I study in Nairobi' may be enough to talk about distance. Your residence building, class times, library routine and room number can stay private. Keep any ticket barcode or booking reference off chat and social posts.

A match may ask out of curiosity. You can answer the part that helps: 'We could meet near the main station.' You do not owe the rest.

Example conversation

Sample: city shared, room kept private

This invented exchange shows a student keeping a meeting public and travel independent.

This is an invented example.

Imani
“I could meet in the station's busy café on Saturday afternoon. I will make my own way there and back.”
Jules
“Can you send your room address so I can collect you?”
Imani
“No, I keep my room private. We can meet at the café door at two if that works.”

Imani supplies the meeting point without making her home or travel booking part of the date.

Work out the trip without leaning on a stranger

Before you agree, check the route, price, last trip home and the hour you can leave. If the trip is too expensive or would strand you, have a call instead.

Do not send fare money or gift cards to a person you know only online. The U.S. FTC warns against sending money to an online love interest you have not met. That warning is about money risk; it does not decide whether this match is honest.

Keep overnight plans separate from a first date

If one of you needs a place to sleep, arrange it independently or choose another day. Your student room is not part of an invitation to a public meeting.

Tell a trusted person where and when you plan to meet. Use a busy public place and keep your own way out.

You can leave early if the meeting does not feel right. Know the last bus or train before you go.

Choose from the answer

Choose the meeting only if the plan works

  • Public place and your own return trip work

Confirm the hour and tell a trusted person the plan.

  • The trip needs their money or their sofa

Wait. A call is a smaller choice while you arrange an independent plan.

  • They refuse your privacy limit

Do not travel to persuade them. End contact and use the app's safety tools if needed.

A boundary only needs a short sentence

Try, 'I do not share my room address with someone I have not met.' You do not need to debate the rule. Notice whether the answer is accepted.

If they keep pushing, ask for money or turn up where you study without an invitation, end the conversation and use your app's block or report tools. If you feel in immediate danger, seek local help.

Questions you may still have

Is a video call enough to trust a person?

No. A call can help you talk, but it cannot prove how someone will act in person.

Should I show my ticket to confirm the date?

No. Agree on a public meeting time. Keep booking references and exact travel details to yourself.

What if I cannot afford a separate place to stay?

Choose a day trip you can manage or wait. A first date need not involve an overnight visit.

Can I change my mind after booking?

Yes. Tell your trusted contact and make the safest plan available for getting home.
